COURSE | 1 Lesson Ann uses a variety of tools for painting dye on fabric for making fine lines as well as bold marks. You will see how working in layers can create complex patterns. She will discuss an array of painting tools and how to adjust the viscosity of the colors to help make them work for you. She demonstrates painting a silk scarf and compares others with different outcomes. Colors: blacks and grays.

Gallery

Mixing blacks and grays. Swatches labeled, test strips washed, then paired with unwashed pieces.
Refillable markers, fine tip bottles, and small brushes make hard-edged lines on dry cotton.

Black dye painted and stamped, where the dye makes thick blobs, the center is washed out.
Cut rollers make stripes, fine tip bottle makes lines, foam brush makes squares and smooth roller makes speckled stripes on silk broadcloth.
Dry soda-soaked silk organza with three values of gray applied with a roller.
China silk scarf: clear print paste lines, thick dye applied with fine tip bottle, thin dye with dropper and wool knob.
Thick colors applied with multiple pointed bottle, then thin colors poured and spread with gloves.
