Beyond the Book: Paint & Print with Dye - Lesson 8: Working Large

COURSE | 1 Lesson Ann moves to larger scale fabric for her demonstrations with some new approaches to pattern-making. She also demonstrates a shortcut to adding color to the background after the fabric is printed and/or painted but before it is washed: low-water immersion dyeing. The full LWI process is described in an additional handout. Colors: gold, brown/tan, warm blue, rust/orange.

Lesson 8 includes the following

Foam roller holding a pattern from a raised surface. Fabric taped to thin plastic, and moved together without smearing underneath.
Stamping and painting textures on a very large piece of fabric that can be moved to reach. Shapes will be cut out after whole piece is washed.
Monoprinting large pieces may require printing in sections. Foreground piece was done in halves, then turned over and painted.
3-yard piece and detail, monoprinted 5 times with five different colors. Overlapping may not show with complexity.
Foreground piece monoprinted in thirds, lengthwise. Finished piece shown in Lesson 6 Review.
Each monoprint had different wood grain patterning and different thin colors painted over.
3-yard piece of sateen, sprayed while wrinkled with gray dye, outdoors, then LWI with rust/orange.
3-yards cotton and detail, entirely printed with a roller, wrinkles rearranged on a 4-foot square area.
Working on a large piece may require covering parts of it to maintain moisture as you work.
