Ann Johnston | Textile Artist

Ann’s wide-ranging interests are suggested by her BA in literature from Stanford and her MA in geography from the University of Oregon. She attributes her artistic interests to an open mind and her desire to keep learning, independently and continuously. Her growing mastery of color and design is focused through her fabric dyeing and quiltmaking; cultural geography and geology frequently inform her textile work.

Ann has now been exploring techniques that work best with Procion MX dyes for over 40 years. Since she wrote Dye Painting! In 1992, she has taught hundreds of in-person workshops; her students appreciate her openness and generosity. Her books, videos, articles and lectures are resources for fiber artists around the world.

Ann’s art quilts have been seen and enjoyed in museums and other venues in the US and internationally for many years. She continues to produce innovative and powerful work that fascinates her viewers and collectors.
"Ann leads you through a well-thought-out series of exercises that will help you gain a lot of experience in a short time. It is a wonderful book for dyers and surface designers—all over the world—no matter what level of skill and experience."

"For Johnston, shape - created by color and value, pattern and texture - is a vehicle to express a complex interpretation of her complex world. Her focus is on symmetry that isn’t precise, pattern that only seems to repeat, and rhythm that is continually varied. The constant tension between order and disorder is a unifying thread that links her quilted pieces into a cohesive body of work."

"My favorite aspect of her teaching is that she includes one more design tool: the Idea, and she plants that at the base of her design elements. She believes, and I second the motion, that good work must have meaning, and that first you settle on your idea, and Then you get to work with your skills. Oh yeah, and she tells the artist that you gotta practice, since a lot of this stuff is about using your intuition, your taste, instead of picking right vs wrong choices."
