Beyond the Book: Paint & Print with Dye - Lesson 1: Let it Run

COURSE | 1 Lesson Ann introduces Procion MX dyes and shows how colors flow when you start on fabric wet with soda solution using both thin and thick mixtures. You learn about the relationship between the amount of moisture on the fabric, how the dye spreads, and how and why the colors separate differently. She uses 7 types of fabric in the lesson including silk to compare results. Colors: purple, lime, navy, peach.

Beyond the Book: Paint & Print with Dye - Lesson 2: Control the Flow

COURSE | 1 Lesson Ann compares the results of painting thin color on dry soda-soaked fabric with samples from Lesson 1. She shows using both thin and thick mixes with several surface techniques on fabric of various weights and demonstrates using the print paste to create soft and hard edges, and blended colors. Beyond the Book: Paint & Print with Dye - Lesson 4: Stamps and Blocks

COURSE | 1 Lesson Ann emphasizes printing with blocks and stamps of your design to develop your own style. She discusses how to choose materials, some that can be heat molded, others that can be scored to make very fine lines, adjusting the viscosity of the colors as needed by the materials. You see how to create complexity by overlapping and varying scale and direction of prints. Colors: rusts and aquas.

Beyond the Book: Paint & Print with Dye - Lesson 5: Mask Out, Stencil, Screen

COURSE | 1 Lesson Ann shows using various masking techniques from simple to complex. She discusses how to improve your results by using appropriate fabrics and alternate tools and methods of application. Lecture: A Versatile Tool for Dyeing Fabric

Ann has a favorite tool when she applies dye to fabric.  You might not guess how she made some examples, making lines, shapes, colors, values, patterns and textures. Her images and short videos will give you lots of ideas how to make your own marks on fabric projects, art and wearables. Ann’s presentation blends creativity and practicality, tying it together with a selection of her quilts that use these techniques.

Beyond the Book: How to Use the Lessons

Imagine you are sitting at my table while I work. Just watch and listen. I want you to see how much fun it is to explore printing and painting with dye. Take away what interests you and go from there.

I designed my demonstrations to give you a deeper understanding than you may already have of how Procion dyes work and how to manage your results. The lessons may answer some questions and help you make choices: which colors to mix, how much moisture, the viscosity of the print mix, the type of tools, the fabric characteristics, and the way you layer the colors. Each lesson builds on earlier information.

  • Use the printable Handouts with all the recipes you will need.
  • Use the Lesson Overview as a resource: it has details of colors, tools, techniques. It also reviews the concepts, gives studio tips, and offers practice activities.
  • View the Gallery for each lesson to see more details and possibilities related to my demonstrations.
  • After you finish one or more of the videos, continue pursuing your own interests in surface design on fabric.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have access to the course?

Once enrolled, you have immediate access, and you can re-watch the videos as often as you want. Enrollment includes permanent access to the videos and handouts.

Is the content downloadable?

No, the video content  is not downloadable, but you can watch it anywhere on any of your devices. All the handouts are downloadable, to save on your computer or print.

What are the lessons like?

Ann’s courses are professionally produced, filmed and edited. They are full of information that Ann delivers as she dyes the fabric. You will want to revisit them over and over again. As in all Ann’s workshops, the course is process - not product - oriented. Her emphasis is on freedom to learn at your own pace, to pick up information as you are ready for it, then go back and find more that you missed. Individually, they progress in order of complexity and as a whole course, they build on each other.  The Lesson Overviews contain notes on all the key elements that Ann wants you to learn and suggestions for further practice in your studio. The platform allows you to rewind at will, and the three main demonstrations in each lesson have time stamps to help you jump to them as you need. The Gallery handouts offer images and captions that expand on the content of each lesson. This course is designed to feel like your own personal workshop with Ann.

Can I share the handouts?

No, the handouts for Beyond the Book: Paint & Print with Dye have been specifically produced for those that purchase the course or individual lessons. Just like the handouts Ann has been sharing in her workshops for years, they are meant for your individual use; they are copyrighted and not to be reproduced. Much of the information is already in her book Color by Design: Paint and Print with Dye, 2nd Editon

Is the class refundable?

No; however, if you have issues with your purchase please contact Ann4Learn@gmail.com.

What supplies do I need?

All of the dyes and auxiliaries are the same in all the lessons and they are well explained and illustrated in Ann’s book, Color by Design: Paint and Print with Dye, 2nd Edition. Ann briefly reviews them at various points in Beyond the Book: Paint & Print with Dye. Her tools are easy to find and she discusses some of the many alternatives you may find or make yourself. After you view the lesson the first time, you will get an idea of what supplies you will want to gather to follow your own design and color interests. You probably already have many of them.
